In the end, Dave was the one who refused and was too stubborn to consider actually letting John see him as a viable option. He was too scared, and it cost him their friendship. In retrospect, it was kind of dumb, but he was also a teen who was self conscious. He's much less self conscious now, if only because he had a fanbase now who rather him be around.
